Solidly established as a large and prosperous industrial center in the 1800s, Danbury continues to expand and thrive in the 20th century. Still nicknamed the Hat City in tribute to the millinery industry that formed its original industrial base, Danbury has added numerous new industries and businesses which contribute to the city's success. Examples include pharmaceuticals, engineering, electronics, printing and publishing, paper, medical and optical instruments and high-technology research and development.
Residential construction is almost continuous in an effort to support the growing population. As a result, Danbury offers a diverse selection of new single- and multi-family homes, apartment complexes and condominiums, and a collection of historic homes, including the elegant estates and small weekend getaways on Candlewood Lake.
Educational, recreational and entertainment opportunities abound within the city. Elementary, junior and senior schools provide education to students of all achievement levels. Danbury is particularly proud of its special preschool program for handicapped children. Numerous private secular and parochial schools are also found in town, including vocational and alternative high schools. Higher education is available at the two campuses of Western Connecticut State University where more than 20 undergraduate programs are offered in day and evening classes.
Fishing, boating, bird-watching and a multitude of seasonal outdoor pleasures are enjoyed at Danbury's two lakes - Candlewood Lake, featuring 96 miles of shoreline and Kenosha Lake. Richter Park is the home of a superb golf course - one of the top 50 city courses in the nation, and a center for the arts.>
Shopping enthusiasts will delight in Danbury's many malls, including the Danbury Fair Mall with over 200 stores. Travel Times: Bradley Airport (BDL): 90 Minutes, New Haven: 45 Minutes, New York City: 80 Minutes, NY Airports: 90 Minutes, Stamford: 65 Minutes, White Plains: 50 Minutes |
