How to Set Up and Manage Your Home Office

Individuals worldwide are breaking the chains of the corporate world, in order to pursue a career that gives them a sense of self-worth and more time with their family. Operating a successful home-based business takes commitment, know how, and plenty of patience. Every day can be a challenge if you~re not prepared.

If you have a family start of by running your plans past them and get everyone excited and on board for your new venture. Your family should clearly understand and accept the limitations and boundaries you have set forth for your new workspace. It is important that you have an area where you can work quietly and undisturbed.

Necessary Equipment

With a fully functional office, you're ready for any challenge. Begin with the right equipment: computer; printer; scanner; fax machine; telephone line; calculator; bookcase; file cabinet; and office supplies. A comfortable office is the key to working effectively. Soft lighting and the proper chair can make all the difference.

Using a Work Address

Avoid using your home address as your business address. Although you're working from home, it is important that you portray a professional image. Some places like MailBoxes Inc.,offer a mailbox with a street address and suite number. It can be a hassle going out to get your mail, but in the end, it is worth it.

Managing Your Work Time

While initially you may think that you'll have much more time working from home, many people find that time management becomes more difficult. There are always things to do at home other than work. It is important to set aside time for work and time for family. Be sure not to let these two mix.

Start with an agenda. Use a desk calendar or a daily plan- ner to organize your time. You can even plan your daily activities using the tools in Microsoft Outlook. Keep to the list and check each task off as you finish it. Include time for lunch, 15-minute breaks, and time with the family. If you're more productive working 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., then schedule your time accordingly.

If you need to do business calls try and do them when everyone else is out. It can be very distracting to have others around. If someone else is always home be sure to keep your office door closed and ask family members to stay out.

Be Reasonable

In order to use your time more effectively look into purchasing software programs that can automate some of your filing needs. There are many different software packages that can do everything from tracking inventory to filing your business contacts. This can save you time and money in the long run.

Know your limitations. Yes, you're the boss, but even the boss gets over-booked. Try prioritizing your work and setting daily goals. Running a home-based business often means you're working alone.

Family members can be an inexpensive way to hire help. Contract a family member to help with some of the work - or to do clerical duties - while you tend to the more important issues. Delegating helps you be more efficient while keep- ing your customers happy.

Setting up your own home business can be a stressful and time consuming venture. By organizing and planning right from the word go everything will seem to go much more smoothly.
